A beautiful February weather-wise … economy crumbling…

The weather was pretty amazing so far this month — record high temperatures last week and most of the snow has melted. If this is what global warming does, it’s not too bad… at least so far… and at least for Toronto.

Yesterday was a holiday — Family Day… I think it’s only the second Family Day we’ve had in Canada… a nice little perk given by the government, and in February when many people are feeling down. Last year though, my company gave us Family Day off, but then took away one of the Easter weekend days. But, checking the company holiday schedule, somehow, it looks like this year we get both.

The economy though is falling apart. Last month my company laid off 10% of it’s people — 750 people. That’s small in comparison to the job losses in the news everyday. Right now I worry about GM, as they announced last night the plan to layoff another 20,000 workers in the USA — about 50,000 worldwide. It is scary, as things get worse and more and more people are losing jobs each day.

And I worry about myself, as my debt load is too high. I’m thinking I’ll be ok, if I can survive the next 2 months. But I don’t know what I’ll do if I ever lose my job. I’ve had the same job now for almost 20 years!! Finally I got a company parking spot last fall. In all my life, I’ve never experienced anything like what’s going on now. Worse case, I lose my job and lose my house, and all my saving vanish.

I’m hoping and praying that smart people will figure out how to get out of this economic mess we find ourselves in now.

Losing my job though — though sad and scary… I will also treat it as an opportunity to do something new. It would give me a chance to focus more on my website and photography endeavours. I will treat losing my job as a positive. It is sad though, when giving 20 years of your life to a company, they can just toss you aside.

I like being a software developer, for I create something. I would hate being a salesman, for they don’t create anything… they just move from one sale to the next… always striving for money.

At work now… an important meeting in 15 minutes…

On my way home now… feel good today, accomplishing much I think and focusing well on my new task. My current task — to create a simplified installation of an application. And it’s coming together nicely. I was kindly pointed at this application called “Inno” — a free installer builder application. It takes sometime to figure out (and need to relearn Pascal), but it’s working very nicely and has all the power I require. I think in the end my installer will be one of the best in the company.

Oh… but I didn’t think about the Mac… for I’ll have to do something completely different if they want this to work on a Mac as well.

And now on the subway train… I like taking public transit sometimes, for it gives me a chance to listen to my audible book on “The Tao” again and to write in my blog.

I have a lot of new things to write about too. My 100 year old Aunt finally moved into a nursing home 1 week ago. I spent most of the long weekend moving some of her things. We have to have everything moved out of her apartment by the end of March. And I worry a bit — for the big furniture… a sofa and bedroom set… are still left to move.

Last week, my home-made porn site was getting much more visits than normal… hits jumped from about 100/day to over 3000 hits last Monday…

I’ll continue this train of thought in my next post…
