First attempt of Google Alert to my Blog — not successful

So, on Friday night I felt happy, thinking that I found a way to automatically update a page on my blog with Google Alerts. So, I created a bunch of alerts, using an RSS feature they have now — and installed an RSS feed receiver plugin on my wordpress blog. In principal, it seems like a great idea. I can have my site updating automatically, pulling in information from all over the world on the topics I choose.

However, after a couple days, the results I was getting was getting polluted by too much noise. First off and worse, some of the alerts that came in were actually pointers to virus like websites — a site where, once you clicked on the link to visit the site, it tried to install something on your computer. For that reason alone, I cannot use this automated approach to update my site.

The alerts I choose were: “Toronto nude modeling”, “Toronto nude”, “Nude Photography”, “Nudist”, and “Naturist”.

Oops… almost forgot my timestamp…

So, my second attempt was to pipe it to an email account instead of RSS. I’m still not sure how to get email to update my site, but I thought maybe the spam filter would catch these. Nope… I set up a gmail email account just for the purpose of receiving the alerts. And it didn’t remove any of these spam type messages.

I’m thinking now that, unless I can find a smarter more reliable way to get alerts, I need to use a manual approach. That is, what I’m using now is google alerts but manually filtering the results and manually adding the information to my Nude News page I created. Last night I was updating the page manually — but that seems too tedious. I’ll change it to creating a file on my site and including the file on the page. Not sure though how to include a file on a page in Wordpress.

The other thing too is that besides the virus type sites, some alerts are sending me links that seem to have nothing to do with the alert I set up.

Plus, I don’t really like RSS in that it’s relying on an external source for the information when building the page. Information that was interesting last week on the page might all of sudden disappear and I wouldn’t be able to find it again.

Any ideas on how to make this better?

I think I need to stick with this manual approach. But I will still use Google alerts for finding the news and sites to include. And it will help me become an expert in these topics. Hopefully my site will grow and become a resource people go to for information. And people are free to send me something to include in email too… or via a comment on the page. I manually review all the comments — just to make sure spam garbage doesn’t find it’s way in.

I have a lot to learn. I wonder how google alerts even works?

I know my reading on The Tao teaches to not make plans, for without plans you cannot fail. I want to summarize all these Tao teachings on another page or blog entry. And I want another page also to talk about going bra-less — I was inspired and promised this to my friend Kat.

Things to do:

  • Make a page with wonderful quotes from The Tao
  • Make a page about the benefits of going bra-less
  • Organize my photos… I want to build an automated script to rename and move them.
  • Redo my home porn site: MyAsianLover.com

On my nudist page I have a news section. To be honest, I don’t see much alternative but to edit it manually, because it’s my news presentation and I don’t want my readers confronting the problems you describe here. I’ve found all the same kinds of problem with automated content.

I whittle down about 50 news feeds and hand-pick the stories, if there are any at all that I want to include. Always there is a high proportion of rubbish coming in about pre-teen lesbians or Obama being a nudist. Picking the good stuff is pretty labour-intensive, I have to admit.

Any keyword you use has ramifications, and of course ‘nudist’ and the like may take you straight into exploitative and stupid porn territory. I don’t include your home site in that category by the way!

I take the point that you’re willing to experiment, and yu might like to try http://rssfeedreader.com/ - I’ve had a tentative go with this, and it doesn’t seem to produce too much rubbish. You pick your subject and then put a piece of code on your site, sit back and wait for the news to arrive. But as usual you will want to monitor what arrives.

I’m glad you don’t want to fill your pages with garbage, and wish you the best of luck. Maybe I’ll add your feed to my news-gathering efforts.

That’s for the pointer. I’ll check out http://rssfeedreader.com/

While the manual process is time consuming, I have a workflow now that makes it not too bad — and enjoyable too, discovering what my alerts are finding for me.

I solved the problem of including a file on my post — so now just need to edit a few text files and my News & Links page updates.
